Featured Hall of Colored Pottery

The development of Taiwan's colored pottery had started by Lin Chi Yeh and Tien Mu Lin whom had great contributions to colored pottery at a later stage. Both were born in Chiayi. Because of this, we had organized the first colored pottery festival in 1997 in Chiayi, reorganizing the cultural assets and identifying colored pottery as the cultural feature of our city. Thereof, we can say that the hometown of colored pottery is Chiayi.

Origin of Establishment

The development of Taiwan's colored pottery had started by Ye Lin Chi and Lin Tien Mu whom had great contributions to colored pottery at a later stage. Both were born in Chiayi. Because of this, we had organized the first colored pottery festival in 1997 in Chiayi, reorganizing the cultural assets and identifying colored pottery as the cultural feature of our city. Thereof, we can say that the hometown of colored pottery is Chiayi.

Our hall begun to operate on May 13, 2000.

Area 1/the beauty of colored pottery

This area is the entrance for appreciation. The attraction of its design focuses on its perceptual space effects so that audience can taste the special aesthetic appreciation. This area is to build up creative space with aesthetic effects, which allows audience have a good first impression about our hall and the beauty of colored pottery.

Area 2/exploration of colored pottery

This area is to introduce the life, creation legend, and accomplishments of Yeh Wang and to introduce the locations of important colored pottery works and the status of relics, which explains the origin and history of colored pottery. By using narrative and participation methods to design the theme, letting audience have a better understanding about Yeh Wang's style and speciality through appreciation and interaction.

Area 3/colored pottery and architecture decoration

The decoration part of colored pottery is usually higher, it is not easily being identified by people. The purpose of this area is to allow audience observe the decorative architecture in colored pottery works subtly and the decorative functions. It makes audience understand that decoration arts of architecture has very close relationship with colored pottery.

Area 4/innovation of colored pottery

The most important accomplishment of Mr. Tien Mu Lin is of his research, study, education & proclamation on the innovation of colored pottery. It created a new path for the inheritance and development of colored pottery.

Area 5/modern artists

This area is designed to become a place where the artists can publish their study result and exchange industrial information.

Area 6/special exhibition

To regularly exhibit all kinds of colored pottery works with various styles, increasing the appreciation degree of exhibited works.

Poem Shield

Adapted from the famous poem that Jian-hun Chen, Chiayi poet, who wrote about colored pottery, along with Mr. Yu-shan Lin's autography, the color-painted poem shield of colored pottery that Mr. Huang-yi Lin produced is the main spirit of our hall.

Fighting Wall

In the past, when people built a temple, they would divide a temple into 2 sides. People would hire artisans with different styles to construct the two sides of a temple, making artisans to fully present their skills without any reservations, which is called “contenders”.

Also, people might hire different artisans to construct different temples, which is called “antagonist of skills”. It would allow to present diverse, skillful, and styling decoration of temples architecture.

In order to inherit such a spirit, we have invited 20 contemporary artisans of colored pottery to place their works all together at the same wall. It will also allow artisans appreciating one another's works, learning from each other, as well as letting audiences appreciate diverse works.

Children Creation Area

The pottery classroom will thoroughly exhibit children's creation.

Pottery Classroom

To regularly organize educational activities such as seminar, workshop, children summer camp, etc.

Chia's Pottery House

There are 5 pottery-imitated houses where have equipped with computer and multimedia, so that children can further understand colored pottery by operating the computer.

Library

Providing important academic research theses and national & international professional publications regarding colored pottery.
